Maineiacs Fall to Chicoutimi

Chicoutimi, QC– It was a quick turn around for the Lewiston Maineiacs and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.  Both teams played on Friday night.  Lewiston was able to skate past the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 6-5.  The Sagueneens on the other hand, lost 6-3 to the Drummondville Voltigeurs.  They only got 11 shots off Friday night.  Saturday was different story.  Chicoutimi brought the offense as they defeated Lewiston 6-1.  Dominic Jalbert led the way with a goal and two assists for the Sagueneens.  Eric Gelinas got the Maineiacs only goal of the night.

Lewiston struggled to stay out of the box in the period.  They went to the box four times that period but Eric Gelinas penalty was a matching minor.  Chicoutimi would capitalize on their third powerplay.  It was former Maineiac, Nicolas Therrien, who found the back of the net with 3:22 remaining in the stanza.  The helpers went to Christopher Guay and Louis-Félix Laporte

Just like last night, Lewiston responded quickly on their only powerplay of the period.  Dominic Savoie would win the face off back to Eric Gelinas; Gelinas let a soft wrister go and it found the back of the net.  The goal came at the 17:47 mark.  Savoie got the only assist.

The Sagueneens tried to answer right back as they got a few shots on Connelly but the first year goalie made some key saves.  The teams went to the dressing room tied at one.

Lewiston would get the first great chance in the second period.  They would go on the powerplay at the 2:30 mark.  They would be in control for most of the powerplay.  Chicoutimi cleared the puck at the end of the Maineiacs man advantage and had a great scoring chance.  It was a better defensive play by the Maineiacs defense.

Chicoutimi would take over the period when Mathieu Populus snapped one past Connelly’s left shoulder.  Olivier Ouellet and Dominic Jalbert set the play up at the 6:22 mark.  It looked like the Sagueneens went up 3-1 but the goal was waived off when a hand pass was called against Chicoutimi.

Lewiston wasn’t able to get anything going in the second.  There were turnovers in front of Connelly and he (Connelly) left some rebounds for the Sagueneens.  Tom Michalik would go to the box with 31 seconds remaining in the period.

Maineiacs killed off Michalik’s penalty but the penalty would still cost the Maineiacs.  Louis-Félix Laporte got his first of the season at the 1:32 mark.  Alexandre Lavoie and Jean-Philippe Foucher picked up the helpers.

The struggles continue for Lewiston.  Dominic Savoie cleared the puck out of Connelly’s crease right to Christopher Guay, who was along the boards.  He let a slap shot go that went past Connelly’s glove side.  The tally came at the six minute mark with assists going to Olivier Painchaud and Dominic Jalbert.

Chicoutimi put the nail in the coffin when Jalbert let a shot go from the top of the blue line.  It was a powerplay tally with Nicolas Therrien and Christopher Guay getting a point on the play.  It came at the 10:45 mark and Maxime Gratchev was in the box.

Ed Harding pulled Jonathan Connelly with 2:30 remaining.  Olivier Painchaud would an empty netter with 32 seconds to go.  Dave Bouchard got the only assist on the play.

Connelly is 1-1 on the young season; he stopped 27 of 32 shots.  Sean Coulton got his first ever win in the QMJHL as he made 20 saves on the Maineiacs.  Lewiston was 1 for 2 with the man advantage.  Chicoutimi was 2 for 8 on the powerpay.

The Three Stars Were:

3. Nicolas Therrien (Chicoutimi)

2. Louis-Félix Laporte (Chicoutimi)

1. Christophe Guay (Chicoutimi)
