For the second straight day, the United States under-18 select team needed overtime to pick-up the victory at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament. Alex Galchenyuk (Sarnia Sting, OHL) and Jordan Masters (Muskegon Lumberjacks) each had a goal in the third period and a shootout tally in the 6-5 victory against co-hosts Slovakia.
Despite a 2-1 overall record, the United States will not be moving on to the medal round with Russia defeating Finland 3-1 earlier in the day. They will play the fifth place game on Friday against the Czech Republic.
South Portland native Jon Gillies didn't get the start in net as Calvin Petersen (Chicago Young Americans midgets, Illinois) was given the start. Petersen stopped eight shots on eleven chances in the first frame. Gilles took over in second and stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced in 45 minutes of action.
Joseph Cox (Compuware Midgets, Mich.) and Louie Nanne (Edina High School, Minn) also scored for the Americans. Masters also added a goal in the second period.
