Joe Widmar decommits from Maine

Joe Widmar, one of Red Gendron’s first recruits has ha change of heart.

According to the US Hockey Report, the 19-year old from Northbrook, Ill., has decommitted from the University of Maine program where he was scheduled to arrive to Orono next season..

Attempts to contact Widmar were unsuccessful as the 6-foot, 205 pound forward is in his first year with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL. He had four goals and four assists in nine games.

Widmar who originally committed to Maine last fall while with the Connecticut Oilers of the Eastern Hockey League where he had 16 goals and 33 assists in 43 games. This summer there was a rumor he had decommitted, but he denied that report.

This is the first Gendron recruit to decommit since the coaching change in May 2013. A few of recruits who were recruited by Tim Whitehead decommitted because of the change in leadership. Nick Roberto who was scheduled to come to Maine this season committed to Boston University where he’s a sophomore with the Terriers. Victor Björkung found a home at Ohio State this year while Brandon Salerno is committed to Alabama-Huntsville next season. Ryan Badger and Ryan Cloonan remain uncommitted.
